Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper

I know that Android usually makes us all think about little green puppies and robotic rainbows, but sometimes, things can’t always be so bright and sunny. Maybe your girlfriend just dumped you. Maybe you lost the chess tournament. Shoot, maybe you live in the South (like me!) and just wish it would rain once in a while!

If you find yourself in similar circumstances or just enjoy the doom and gloom a good thunderstorm brings, you’ve got to check out Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper.

Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper is an incredibly slick, detailed, and fairly realistic depiction of Mother Nature at her finest, and it runs really well, to boot.

Fortunately, you’re not stuck with a one-trick pony, as Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper boasts a pretty full settings menu. From there, you can set cloud count, bolt frequency, wind speed, camera speed, and bolt color. They’re all little things, but they’re the kind of little thing that helps you make your wallpaper experience both unique and totally your own.

I mean, shoot, red lightning? That’s too cool.

Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper is free in the Market, but there’s also a donate version for 99 cents, if you’re so inclined to show the developer some love. If you like lightning, storms, or are just looking for a new wallpaper to use, I’d definitely check out Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper.

A few more pictures as well as download links are after the break.

CyanogenMod 7 freshly ported to the Motorola Droid X

http://www.uptomark.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cyanogenmod-7.jpg

It’s something Motorola Droid X owners have been teased with before. But this time around, it could turn out quite well. Although it remains unreleased as of now, it looks like Motorola Droid X owners may soon be getting a chance to load up CyanogenMod 7 on their devices courtesy of @cvpcs. No, the bootloader hasn’t been unlocked but thanks to some handy work making use of 2nd.init CyanogenMod 7 will now run on top of the Motorola kernels in the Droid X.

As with anything of this nature, some bugs are still present but it’s surely only a matter of time before they get worked out. Some of the things that may or may not work currently are: GPS, 3G/data, camera, camcorder and bluetooth audio while radio, WiFi, USB, charging, sensors, lights, vibration, standard bluetooth are listed as working. The next few days will provide some more details but until then, jump into the Android Central forums to discuss it some more.

Droid X now listed as qHD, a good sign the X2 actually will be

Droid X qHD

Now why would the Motorola Droid X suddenly be listed on the Droid Does with an 560×960 resolution touchscreen? That’s a qHD display, folks. And we’re more than willing to be that’s what’s on the upcoming Droid X2. Some recent Nenamark benchmark tests apparently back it up.

And we’re still awaiting an official announcement from Verizon, but we have a feeling they’ll probably play this one low key, like they did the Droid Incredible 2.

Official Droid X Gingerbread Update Coming May 13?

Google Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the Motorola Droid X has been leaked and rooted but unfortunately, according to rumors, it was rejected by Verizon so it’s still not officially out there.

A new set of hear-say just surfaced according to which an even newer than 4.5.591 build has been finalized by Motorola and sent to Verizon which should approve until tomorrow, May 6. If the rumors turn out to be true, the new ROM will enter its testing phase next Friday, May 13, and could be rolled-out as soon as two weeks from now. Whenever it hits, it can’t come soon enough!

Droid X Quadrant Scores Nearly Double After Gingerbread Update

The recently released Motorola Droid X update (update 4.5.588) brought Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of Motorola’s MotoBlur UI, and is showing some major performance upgrades. The Droid X is powered by a 1GHz processor and after its most recent update it is running Android 2.2 Froyo. After the update it is reportedly getting a score of 1918 which is a significant boost over it’s Android 2.2 update and nearly double the score from running Android 2.1, which the phone launched with (scores shown in image above).

Possible Motorola Prototype Spotted: Fat, Silver Droid X?

The Droid X² may be the Motorola smartphone getting all the spotlight lately, with its first press shots showing up late last week, but there may be yet another Moto Droid lurking in the shadows, as Droid-life has received some pictures of an unidentified Motorola model, purported to be an in-house multi-core prototype.

While this pictured model looks quite similar to the Droid X, you’ll notice this smartphone features a silver faceplate and is significantly thicker than the Droid X, with a bulging battery cover in the rear. While there have been extended batteries available for the Droid X which included replacement covers to let them stick out a bit, we haven’t seen anything like this. It doesn’t quite look like a production model, at any rate, as it doesn’t fit flush against the smartphone’s body. Droid-life speculates that we could be seeing a gutted shell of a Droid X used as a testbed for prototyping new hardware, with the extended case giving engineers room to work.

The silver border around the phone’s screen recalls the Droid X SE we looked at last fall, which never made it to market. Could Motorola have a stash of these cases it’s been using for spare parts? According to the source, this prototype is multi-core, has a 12-megapixel camera, a qHD screen, and is just one of five similarly-equipped smartphones being worked on. For now, we’ll just have to keep our eyes open and see if we don’t run across this odd hardware again, hopefully with some explanation accompanying it.

Droid X 2 Pictures, Benchmark and Video Leak

Well, well, well… look what our friends over at Techno Buffalo have come across – the Droid X2! One of their loyal tipsters has sent in some really great pictures of the DX2, including side-by-side shots with the original Droid X. And as if that weren’t enough, they even grabbed a quick video of this upcoming monster performing a Quadrant benchmark. I know you’re probably frothing at the mouth to see that, so it’s first in line:

Did you see that score? Yeah, that was huge. Of course, I would expect nothing less, considering some of the rumored specs:

  • 1.2GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
  • 768MB RAM
  • 4.3 inch qHD screen (960×540)
  • 8MP Camera
  • Android 2.2.2

According to Techno Buffalo, it has yet to be decided whether it will ship with Gingerbread. If not, though, I would expect an update shortly after release.

As you can tell, it looks a lot like the original X, which made me skeptical about the legitimacy of past leaks. Fortunately, the tipster also decided to take some shots of the X2 next to its predecessor, which makes me more of a believer than ever before.

As you can see, the main difference between the two is the lack of a hardware camera button on the X2.

Even though it’s running Froyo, it looks like it’s rocking the newest version of Blur – the same edition seen in early leaks of Gingerbread for the original Droid X.

While Verizon has yet to announce the device, TB’s tipster suggested a release date of “mid-May,” which can’t come soon enough for me. I think I’ve found my next phone.

Happening Now: Droid X Gingerbread Update Brings A New Bootloader, Kills Root Access

http://cdn.thetechjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/Motorola-DROID-X-1.jpg

It seems that Verizon/Motorola are quietly rolling out an official version of the Droid X Gingerbread update that leaked a couple of weeks ago, but this one is slightly modified. If you recall, the build number for the leak was 4.5.573, but the new update is 4.5.588 – verifying that it is indeed a newer version.

From what I can gather, this update brings one big thing that everyone wants – Gingerbread. But it also brings something that no one wants – a new bootloader. What does this mean? It means that if you’re rooted and you grab this update, it will kill root access and there is currently no way to get it back.

It has been suggested that this update is only rolling out to users with the latest official build from Verizon (build 2.3.340), but if you’re currently rooted then ClockworkMod Recovery should block the update from happening. This is a “silent” update, meaning that there is no notification that the update is available to download, but instead it will download automatically and then you will be prompted to restart your phone so the update can take place.

This is all currently happening right now, so we’ll make sure to update this post with any new details as they arise.

Motorola Droid 3, Droid X 2 and LTE-equipped Targa pictured?

The Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X are both headed toward their one-year anniversaries this summer, which has pretty much become the culling hour for a smartphone of any creed these days. Their successors, ingeniously titled the Droid 3 and Droid X 2, have seemingly made an appearance over atHowardForums, courtesy of longtime forum member wnrussell. He’s also kindly provided imagery of a heretofore unknown device, called the Targa, which promises Verizon 4G LTE and has a protrusion on its rear that looks to be dedicated to accommodating an outsized camera sensor. It reminds us most of Motorola’s XT720, though it sports a chrome outline to its body similar to what you see above on the purported Droid 3. Click past the break to get an eyeful of this Targa device and its Droid X 2 brandmate

Circle Battery Widget Introduces 1% Battery Increments for the DROID X and Other Motorola Phones

This is going to sound super silly to anyone that doesn’t have a Motorola phone, but to those of us that do, this news is monumental.  The developer behind Circle Battery Widget somehow figured out a way to get batteries on Moto devices to show up in 1% increments instead of the standard 10% that we’ve been stuck with for all these months.  The app itself is as simple as it gets and is free in the market, so I highly suggest you check it out if you are one of those constant battery checking OCD persons.  Oh, and we of course love the fact that it fits into almost all minimalist themes.
